What a virtual fitting room is

Published 16 August 2026

A virtual fitting room lets someone preview a garment on a body before they buy. On a fashion product page that usually means the shopper uploads a photo and sees the piece on themselves. It is a visual preview, not a live AR camera and not a size guarantee.

What shoppers mean by virtual fitting room

People type “virtual fitting room” when they want to see a garment on a body without going to a store. Sometimes they mean a live camera. Sometimes they mean a photo. Sometimes they mean a 3D avatar in a brand’s own app. The phrase is loose. The job is not.

The job is: reduce the “does this look like me?” pause before add to cart. That is different from “tell me my size” and different from “put glasses on my face in the camera.”

Photo try-on, AR, and size charts are different jobs

A size chart answers measurements. A photo try-on answers appearance on this person, in this photo. Live AR answers what an item looks like in the room or on a moving face right now.

ConfidFit is the photo job. Shoppers upload a still image on the product page. We wrote a separate comparison if you need the AR split: photo try-on vs AR in fashion retail.

What virtual fitting room technology is doing

In the photo kind, the system takes a shopper photo and a product photo you already have, then generates a composite. The garment should sit on the body in the photo with folds and coverage that look like cloth, not a sticker.

ConfidFit runs that generation through YouCam Apparel VTO (Perfect Corp cloth-v3). The shopper stays on your storefront. The merchant never gets a face gallery. Photo and result binaries are kept only for a short window. See the privacy policy for the retention class.

That is generation plus compositing, not a tape measure. The model does not weigh the shopper. It does not read a size label off the photo and “confirm” it.

What a virtual fitting room cannot do

Every ConfidFit result shows this line: Visual preview only. This is not a guarantee of fit or appearance.

We do not promise fewer returns. We do not promise the size is right. We do not promise the fabric will feel the way the photo looks. If a vendor sells you a virtual fitting room as a returns machine, ask for their sample size and their definition of “success.”

How it shows up on a Shopify product page

On Shopify, the honest place for a photo virtual fitting room is the product page, next to the product photo and the add-to-cart button. Shoppers already decided they might want the piece. They need a preview, not a new destination site.

ConfidFit is a Theme App Block on Online Store 2.0. The merchant enables products, sets a matching category, and can change the button label and colors. Shoppers tap Try on, upload a photo, and wait for the composite. Failed generations are not billed by default. Successful ones are the Try-On Success unit.

Which garments this kind of room can handle

Try-on supports tops, dresses, outerwear, bottoms, and shoes when you enable them with a matching product photo. Intimate apparel and swimwear are not supported.

That limit is product policy, not a marketing tease. Intimate and swim need a different honesty bar than a linen tee.

Common questions

Is a virtual fitting room the same as AR?

No. AR usually means a live camera overlay. A photo virtual fitting room uses a still image. See the photo try-on vs AR guide for the split.

Does a virtual fitting room tell you the right size?

Not this kind. The output is a visual preview. Keep your size chart. Do not replace fit advice with a generated image.

What is virtual fitting room technology actually generating?

For photo try-on: a composite of the garment onto the shopper’s photo. ConfidFit uses YouCam cloth-v3 for that step. It is not a body scan and not a live mirror.

Can a Shopify store add a photo virtual fitting room?

Yes. ConfidFit installs as a Shopify app and a theme block. Shoppers stay on the product page. Open the homepage or the App Store listing if you want the install path.
